Hidden Figures Not So Hidden

hiden-figures-2-mp

What does a Mathematician, an engineer, and informal supervisor have in common? These are three people who helped put men into space, and they are Katherine Goble, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughn.

Watching their TV documentaries over a month ago is so much better than watching the movie, you see movies inspire us to watch great characters such as these three extraordinary ladies telling their stories of how they suffer from being noticed in this male dominated world of being smart. Black people are smart too, and their gender too.

But back in 1957 and the 1960’s, black people were segregated among the white people, and not being respected of their talent and skills they have. They have great minds too.

When I watch Hidden Figures the movie, these three incredible women broke the barrier and sacrifice themselves that black people are smarter and able to help us in any particular way to get into space. They are not spies, they want to help us.

Hidden Figures is nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer.

Best Movies of 2016

rouge-one

Rouge One: Star Wars Story

It’s the best Star Wars movie, but it takes place between The Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope.  Carrie fisher was 19 when she starred in George Lucas Star Wars.  The story was the rebel alliance makes a risky move to steal the plans for the Death Star, setting up an epic saga to follow. Carrie Fisher had just completed the next Star Wars movie now they have to reshoot and redo some scenes. It was her last film. Will they use digital CGI characters to complete it, like the one they use in Rouge One?

singing-in-the-rain

Singing in the Rain (1952)

I know this movie did not come out in 2016, but it was my family favorite movie and especially mom’s favorite who passed away in February 2016. Now Debbie Reynolds passed away and so did her daughter Carrie Fisher. It’s sad to see mother and daughter gone too soon. Now there are happy together. This movie is incredible to watch, the singing and dancing, it just makes you happy and sing-a-long. I don’t know how many times I have seen it this week. It’s One of the best movies throughout the century of filmmaking. I bet my mom and Debbie Reynolds are having a good time.

captian-america-civil-war

Captain America: Civil War

With many people fearing the actions of superheroes, the government decides to push for the Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a hero’s actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. This escalates into an all-out war between Team Iron Man (Iron Man, Black Panther, Vision, Black Widow, War Machine, and Spider-Man) and Team Captain America (Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, and Ant Man) while a new villain emerges. Two teams in a battle. Awesome!

dead-pool

Dead Pool

Did you know Deadpool won for best comedy for Critics Choice Awards? And Ryan Reynolds too for Best Actor in a Comedy? Wow. The movie was that funny. The wise-cracking superhero.  The story was a fast-talking mercenary with a morbid sense of humor is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and a quest for revenge. And he sings Careless Whisper by George Michael, hilarious.

jungle-book

The Jungle Book

Voice actors of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Garry Shandling (1949 – 2016), and other great voice actors. Bring this classic tale to life, with the only human actor on set Neel Sethi.

The director Jon Favreau and his visionary of using CGI animals to life, if he had to use real animals the actors would be dead. The visual effects were incredible and it should win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

edge_of_seventeen

The Edge of Seventeen

Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson).

Hailee Steinfeld is fantastic in this movie and a fantastic performer. She’s a nominated for Golden Globe for this movie if she wins and she could be the youngest to win the Oscars.  Go girl!

conjring-2

Conjuring 2: Enfield Poltergeist

This movie was the scariest to watch, based on a true story of Enfield case by Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, they have witnessed paranormal activity in 1977 and they have interviewed the devil. Scary. What was that noise behind you? If you watch the movie on DVD alone one night.  Your house can scare you and creep you out! Did you hear something? That’s scary!

batman-superman

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

It’s about time they put Wonder Woman with the guys. First Batman and Superman were fighting because Superman destroyed Wayne Enterprise building because of other supermen aliens wanted to take over the earth. But they bonded together, because of their mother was Martha, one was Kent and the other Wayne. Does Superman survive?

la-la-land

La La land

This movie was fantastic! Who would have known that musicals are coming back to the screen? We did have High School Musical 3(2008)? And Hairspray (2007).

The music is melodic but never simplistic; the lyrics are intelligent and intelligible; the script is funny, touching without ever resorting to sentimentality; the two leads are not only skillful but full of a kind of charm that I honestly thought had disappeared entirely from American movies: but here we have Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone just oozing it. She’s hot!

“La La Land,” the most nominated film of the evening, took home eight awards, the most of the night, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (a tie) for Damien Chazelle, Best Cinematography for Linus Sandgren, Best Production Design for David Wasco and Sandy Reynolds-Wasco, Best Editing for Tom Cross, Best Song, and Best Score for Justin Hurwitz, for Critics Choice Awards earlier this month in December.

finding-dory

Finding Dory

The friendly but forgetful blue tang fish begins a search for her long-lost parents, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family.Ellen DeGeneres plays Dory, about a fish who has short Term memory loss and it’s hilarious. Who seek out to find her family in this undersea adventure.

Star Wars: Rogue One

rouge-one-mp

So you going to see Star Wars: The Rouge One over this weekend, you will notice it will not have the iconic Star Wars crawl, it went straight to the movie. This is not the sequel, if you see Darth Vardar in the movie, he was dead in the last movie in Return of the Jedi (1983) and he left a son in the previous films, that we did not know about, which movie was that?

The Star Wars: Rogue One, comes in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It’s confusing, but one day it will sink in. It’s the timeline of the story when it happens. They should have called it Star Wars 3.1: The Rogue One.

“Rogue One” is the first of many “Star Wars Anthology” films. Unlike “The Force Awakens” and its sequels, which will directly continue the original saga, the Anthology films aim to expand the larger Star Wars universe and focus on other characters and conflicts. For example, the next Anthology movie (due May 2018) will focus on a young Han Solo. Can’t wait to see that.

So far it is getting great reviews, based on critic’s reviews some will understand and some will not understand. Other critics may suggest the dialogue is not clever nor the story. But everybody loves a big epic battle scenes. And they were epic. What do they know?

If you are a Star Wars fan, like I am, then I understand the story. Other people will be confused.

The story is when Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a Rebellion soldier and criminal. Who is she? It will have flashback of her childhood and her parents.  It is about to experience her biggest challenge yet when Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) sets her out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. And who does Jyn it gives it too?  With help from the Rebels, a master swordsman, and non-allied forces, Jyn will be in for something bigger than she thinks.

They will be new characters and old. Who will come back? What was C3PO as a teenager? R2D2 Beeps.

The character of Grand Moff Tarkin as played by Peter Cushing in 1977 is digitally recreated using CGI (with actor Guy Henry as body double). Peter Cushing died in 1994.

The music soundtrack is not being conducted by John Williams it is by Michael Giacchino, but it will still have the theme music.

This movie will either get Oscar nominations for technical effects, visual effects or make-up and costuming.

Overall it is a good movie, but please explain your children the history of Star Wars for they would not get confused about the story line and characters.

By the way, stay after the movie to see something special.

Post comments, please.

Ghostbuster Boo

You don’t have to stay in the whole day, just because Tropical Storm Hermine is gone and you have cabin fever the whole weekend on Labor Day weekend, your life isn’t over.

You can go out when the storms are over, and your life is back to normal until the power goes out! Then two hours later, you found yourself asleep with the book on your face.

There are some good movies out there in the multiplex theater in your town, in my town we have don’t have a multiplex theater. We need a better a movie theater that shows more than two screens in Elizabeth City, NC. Going out of town takes gas and it is hour away.

Anyway, if you have seen Ghostbuster is good to see it again. I give it 5 out of 10.  Great story and it’s an all-girl cast Staring Leslie Jones, Erin Gilbert, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnion and Chris Hemsworth ( he does dance at the end).  And they had a lot of cameo appearances such as  Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson,  Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, Ozzy Osbourne, (Why him?)  Al Roker, Pat Kiernan, Rosanna Scotto, and Greg Kelly.

Castle_Ghostbusters
The only thing that is haunted is the fourth floor of Kilachand Hall (formerly Shelton Hall), Eugene O’Neill is said to haunt the building. However, it drew the team behind the new Ghostbusters reboot to BU. It was the gothic architecture of the BU Castle, which appears in the film as the Aldridge Mansion Museum, that captured the attention of the film’s location scout.

Go see it, tonight.

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek MP

To go boldly where no one else has gone before, the trip to the beach theater in Kill Devil Hills was good, except when I keep saying “Engage!” to myself and I kept laughing at myself while I was driving (I needed a travel companion with me).  When I got to the planet, (the movie theater) I saw different aliens (people).  One was dressed like Khan, from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan from 1982. Ricardo Montalban played Khan that was awkward, I am one too.

The story focused on interpersonal relationships of the principals, disrupted with an unexpected crisis, which sets a plot in motion involving a villain motivated by the belief that he’s doing the right thing, necessitating the aid of a resourceful escapee (Jayla, a spirited homage to Jennifer Lawrence’s Ree Dolly in WINTER’S BONE, played by Sofia Boutella). Everything it does right is also everything STAR TREK BEYOND does wrong.

Directed by Justin Lin, written by Simon Pegg (who plays Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott) and Don Jung, the third chapter in the Star Trek reboot opens with a distress call from a stranded vessel lures the crew of the USS Enterprise into a familiar no-win scenario (Kobayashi Maru): a marooned villain, Krall (Idris Elba), seeks vengeance against Captain Kirk and the United Federation of Planets toward whom he directs his misguided wrath.

With this slow moving action- pack- sci-fi-adventure, I love the TV show from 1987 – 1994, Captain Jean-Luc Picard played by Patrick Stewart he was a better actor. I like the way he command the Star Ship Enterprise. I wanted to rent a vehicle from him, but unfortunately, they did not have a Star Ship Enterprise at the Enterprise Rental Car Business.

Sure Star Trek Beyond is an entertaining ride, J.J Abrams is great producer and director and he wanted to do a reboot and create another Star Trek movie after this, sorry spoiler alert, yep it’s happening.  Sulu’s (John Cho) sexual orientation is at the center of why the J.J. Abrams-produced reboot runs afoul of the spirit.

And Star Trek is always, tackling complex social issues with inventive and diplomatic situation. So wonder, the plot was little bit confuse. How about race in America? That will be great story line and they could rely on violence to captivate the audiences has always been the franchise’s Achilles’ heel.

Ghostbuster 3: they are backk

ghostbusters MP

There’s something weird in the multiplex. Who you gonna call? Script doctors. Did you know Ghostbuster is number 1 this weekend trailing right behind is The Secret Life of Pets?

The movie wasn’t that bad, I just like the phrase, plus I needed to grab your attention to read my review.

Anyway, this movie takes you away from all the hoopla from the presidential candidates and family drama. The movie itself is silly and fun to watch.

Your children could clean up their room and one of them is cooking, which is good. Give the child who is cooking for you put them in your will, and give this child money when your child graduate from High School and a college fund. The other two, they have to earned your trust.

We wish they would grow up and they are teenagers! They make good grades but they are kind of slobs. Do you think? No offense.

My house is a mess from these two! Ugh! Teenagers when would they ever learned, hiring a maid is too expensive, last time we hired a maid and something got stolen!

We went to see Ghostbuster 3, the kids were quiet, and they watch the movie like normal adults. They behave properly at the theater but when they got home, they are a mess again! Calgon take me away!

Erin Gilbert (Wigg), of course. She’s a paranormal researcher and Columbia University instructor whose book, “Ghosts From Our Past: Both Literally and Figuratively,” was co-written with her childhood friend Abby (McCarthy). (Not an SNL Alumni, but she hosted the show) Although Erin has since recanted her belief in ectoplasmic life, Abby is still determined to catch and examine a real-life ghost — now with the help of her new research partner, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon).

Leslie Jones is a freaked out MTA worker and aficionado of early Manhattan history. She joins the team, she brings along her own expertly delivered one-liners (not to mention her uncle’s hearse). Leslie Jones is hysterical to watch.  She made me laugh so hard, a popcorn got stuck in my nostrils and I did the Heimlich maneuver on myself and the popcorn landed on someone else popcorn and she ate it. She mumbled it was salty.

Chris Hemsworth played the male secretary for the paranormal team. What? Males can be secretary too and they are good at their job.

Oh by the way, they have a lot of cameos in the movie, that I was surprised to see. So it was not that bad, it was good.  The late Harold Ramis was honored in memoriam in an early scene. Cecily Strong played the Mayor, she was somewhat good.

The ghosts in the movie, maybe cheesy with CGI, it was okay.  They had slimmer, not so friendly like Casper the friendly ghost; I did not know that ghost shoots up slime when they exploded.

Don’t forget to watch the ending of the movie, there are some surprises at the end.

harold_ramis 2

The Late Grate Harold Ramis (November 21, 1944 – February 24, 201), he is being remembered. He won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay for “Groundhog Day” which star his good buddy Bill Murray.

Overall, it was good to watch it. I give it 3 out 4.  Go see it. You would not be disappointed.
