Murder on the Orient Express

Murder On The Orient Express - MP

Murder on the Orient Express is a 2017 mystery drama film directed by Kenneth Branagh with a screenplay by Michael Green, based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie.

The film stars: Branagh as Hercule Poirot, with Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer and Daisy Ridley in supporting roles.

Who is the killer? That’s a mystery, this is the fourth adaptation of Christie’s novel, following a 1974 film, a 2001 TV film and a 2010 episode of Agatha Christie’s Poirot on PBS.

Agatha Christie was an English crime novelist, short story writer, and playwright. She is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world’s longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap, and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contribution to literature.

Did you know there was an actual murder that took place on The Orient Express? Maria Farcasanu was robbed and murdered by Karl Strasser, who pushed her out of the moving train, one year after Agatha Christie’s book was published, that made her write the story.

Did you know the story was inspired when the Orient Express was trapped in a blizzard in 1929? It was going to Çerkezköy, Turkey, where it was marooned for six days.  Two years later Christie was involved in a similar scenario when she was traveling on the Orient Express, and the train got stuck for a period of time due to heavy rainfall and flooding, which washed part of the track away.

Also, the Charles A. Lindbergh kidnapping case inspired the story, in which Lindbergh’s 20-month old son was taken and held for a $50,000 ransom. The ransom was paid, but unfortunately, Lindbergh’s son was never returned.

This movie will be successful and the possibilities of franchising Agatha Christie novels to the movies, which is a good idea.
